The story opens with Barabbas at the edge of those who gathered to be with Jesus as he was crucified. Barabbas was himself condemned to die but because of the Passover, the people were allowed to set someone free. Barabbas himself avoided death by sheer luck: thanks to the Passover, one man was permitted to be set free, and the crowd chose him. Given the new name “Barabbas, the acquitted,” he is condemned by Jesus’s disciples. When Barabbas is freed, he is compelled to follow the three other men sentenced to death to the hill called Golgotha.
